- [GETTING IT DONE](https://vagabondlibrarian.com/getting-it-done/): I have been writing for years, using Works, Word, Apple Works, Google docs, open source, and more—for business and personal use, to write letters, ads, lesson plans, and all the rest. As Word became the preeminent word processing application over the years, starting out with just a few thousand commands, adding thousands more through upgrades, things became more and more complicated. Like so many Word users, I am self-taught, and there’s the rub. I am good at what I know, but have not progressed much past the few thousand commands I first knew, and to this day, still rely on. The movie showed people shouting this from rooftops, at their televisions, and everywhere anyone needed to scream for a well-deserved catharsis. That time has come again, in a way unimagined in our darkest nightmares. Speaking for myself, I can barely open my computer these days without wanting to see it explode the way that computer does in The Good Fight. Hell bent they are on squeezing every last drop from Page features that used to be free. But hey, that&#8217;s biz. So I signed up to use this image, my new Page banner, to promote my forthcoming book, Death Brew. In designing the ad you are allowed to ID a variety of elements to help reach an optimal audience—including the countries where you want the ad to appear. I chose Saudi Arabia, Germany, and the US. - [Tribute](https://vagabondlibrarian.com/tribute/): In thinking about Memorial Day today, I once again held the flag I was given in my Dad’s honor. Not until he died, when the mortuary noticed that he had been a vet, was I given a folded flag to honor his service. I placed it in a cupboard at home and when we moved, I loaded it in the trunk of my car, and there it stayed for way too long. Not until a friend, whose son is in the Air Force reminded me of the importance of the flag, and how leaving it in my trunk could easily [&hellip;]
- [The Day the Darlings Died](https://vagabondlibrarian.com/the-day-the-darlings-died/): Once again, I sit looking out over Colvos Passage, tears dripping onto my keyboard, blood dripping off the knife.  Once again, I killed them, the darlings in my new book. Just like in all previous books, they had to go. I think William Falkner is given credit for the term, &#8220;kill your darlings,&#8221; advising writers to &#8220;get rid of your most precious, self indulgent passages, for the good of your literary work.&#8221; There are others who take credit; Ginsberg, Welty, Oscar Wilde. - [It’s a Miracle](https://vagabondlibrarian.com/its-a-miracle/): I had such fears, none of them justified. Susan said my snoring blew the tiles off the ceiling. I said, meh. She said I stopped breathing off and on all night long. I said. I’m still here. She dealt with my lackadaisical   attitude by buying a noise machine that masked my snoring and other wretched sounds she swore I made. Susan can be very dramatic, but most of the time, right-damn. It wasn’t until many months ago when my cardiologist  diagnosed an irregular heart beat. No big deal, I take meds, I’m good to go for a few decades more. As he [&hellip;]

Another moment, please. Okay, better. When I ordered it over the phone from my local Mac store in Seattle, the woman dutifully asked many qualifying questions. “No, just the MacBook Pro, the 1099.00 one, please.&#8221; &#8220;Sir, you can got much more memory, and stuff like the retina do hicky, and. . .” Those are things I don’t need,” I said, politely.  She paused. &#8220;You’re right, sir,”  she said, after I told her that I had made my current machine last over ten [&hellip;]
- [Mr. Suckee](https://vagabondlibrarian.com/mr-suckee/): Yesterday was my last day of one-day-a-week subbing on the island this school year. Grade six, six periods, hot outside, no air conditioning, blue sky, only two weeks left. Thought I had skills, but with not much control of expectations or consequences, sometimes skills don’t count for jack. Sixth and final period, fingernails digging deeper into the chalkboard whiteboard, clock moving slower and slower. At the end of last period, behind my back, a kid erased part of my name on the board to read, Mr. Jonas Suckeee. “Are you really Mr. Suckee,” sniggered a kid, as the next class entered–big time laughter. - [Persistence](https://vagabondlibrarian.com/persistence/): Like all authors I have received more than my fair share of rejection letters. I’m not sure if others who have been rejected multiple times–being illustrators, musicians, or anyone who creates and starts out tender but develops a tough skin–have kept their rejection notices as faithfully as I have. Only now has my librarian/pack rat filing gene been rewarded. At least in the writing biz, all of us now know that you do not even get a rejection notice anymore. No more, “Dear Author” heartfelt, thanks but no thanks. Now they just tell you that if you have not heard [&hellip;]

Now we live fifteen feet in front of Colvos Passage, a body of water that’s part of Puget Sound. - [Life’s Too Short](https://vagabondlibrarian.com/lifes-too-short/): During the ten years Susan was dreaming about her perfect car, no one told her that the convertible would be a dead and dying model by the time she started cruising the island of Vashon. After seeing one of those Yahoo news lists—Ten Things American Aren’t Buying Anymore, I did a search of similar articles concerning the convertible. And indeed, the lovely Susan has once again,  flown in the face of the conventional, declaring to the world, I will not be bored.
